Blossoms & Finches 12 x 24

Regular price  $ 850.00
Sale price  $ 850.00 Regular price

This painting measures 12 x 24 with a 2.25 inch gold-leafed edge. I begin with graphite drawing on the wood surface, adding multiple layers of oil paint, washes, glazes, and metal-leaf.  Each of my paintings has about 30 layers.

Blossoms & Finches” depicts the American Goldfinch with Peonies.  I of course know that Peonies don't grow in trees, but I've always loved the Peony and wanted to partner it with the Goldfinch.  Painting the goldfinch taught me about freedom.  After trying to keep birds in a cage, they were actually getting depressed - and I returned them to the breeder.  A few days later, goldfinches swarmed my backyard and the bright flashes of color filled my eyes and I saw birds how they were supposed to be - free and vibrant.

Why I make Art

"I believe that Art Makes Life Better. I grew up in rural South Carolina in a ramshackle farmhouse and I learned at an early age how fulfilling making artwork with own hands could be. All of my work is really a celebration of that - of noticing - taking in - and being surrounded by nature." - Joseph
